I compared my GenUltimate!® strips to my OneTouch® strips and I’m getting different readings, which one can I trust/which one is more accurate?”

When comparing strips, especially between different brands, variance is to be expected. Every brand of test strips will read within an accuracy range that follows FDA guidelines. This is because the technology (made convenient for portable and at-home use) does not detect your exact blood glucose as the equipment at a medical lab would. Instead, the results will fall within a certain range that is allowed by the FDA.

Different readings do not necessarily indicate that one brand is more accurate than the other. It could be that the different strips are reading at opposite ends of the accuracy spectrum. It is possible that one brand/lot may read on the minus end of the range and the other brand/lot reads on the plus side, which can explain a point difference. This would mean that your true blood glucose falls somewhere in between these readings – that is, if both strips are working up to standard.

If you are ever unsure about whether your meter and strips are working properly, you can test with OneTouch® Ultra® Control Solution, as stated in the user manuals for both the OneTouch® meter and the GenUltimate!® test strips.

Which meters are compatible with the strips?

The strips only work with the OneTouch® Ultra®, OneTouch® Ultra® 2, and OneTouch® UltraMini® meters. GenUltimate!® currently does not work with any other type of meter.

Are 3rd-party diabetic test strips OK to use?

Yes, choosing 3rd-party test strips (ones made by a different company than your glucose monitor) may be a more economical solution for your diabetic supply needs. It is important to remember to make sure your test strips work correctly with your monitor. Check read all labeling to be certain that they are compatible.

Does it matter when my meter was made?

Will my Ultra® meter need special calibration to use GenUltimate! test strips?

Yes, OneTouch® Ultra®, Ultra®2, and UltraMini® meters sold in the US have coding capability. Code numbers are used to calibrate your meter with the test strips you are using to obtain accurate test results.You must code every Ultra® meter before using it for the first time and then every time you change to another vial of test strips.

Coding is easy! Start with the meter off. With clean dry hands, remove a GenUltimate!® Test strip from the vial. Insert the test strip into the test port. Make sure the three contact bars and meter are facing you. Push the test strip in as far as it will go. Do NOT bend the test strip.

After the start-up test screen appears, the meter will display the code from your last test. If the codes already match, wait three seconds. If the code on the meter does not match the code on the test strip vial, press ▲ or ▼ to match the code number on the test strip vial. Wait approximately 3 seconds. The display will advance to the screen with the flashing blood drop icon. The meter is now ready to perform a blood glucose test.

How can I recode my meter?

To recode a OneTouch® Ultra®, Ultra® 2, or UltraMini® meter, follow these steps:

Step 1. Gently insert a clean strip into your meter with the black stripes going into the meter facing up.
Step 2. When the “C” or “Code” screen appears, immediately press the directional arrow buttons (for Ultra® 2 and UltraMini®) or the “C” button (for Ultra®) and stop at the number to match the code printed on your strip vial.
Step 3. If the “apply blood” screen appears before you get a chance to change code, take the strip out and repeat steps 1 and 2 again.

Where can I find the code number for my strips?

The code number that you would recode your meter to is printed on the side of the vial of test strips, on the right side of the GenUltimate!® label.

How should the strips be stored?

Use within 90 days of opening the test strip vial and always close the cap on the vial after each use. Unused strips should be stored in their original vial at room temperature between 40°-86°F (4°-30°C). DO NOT refrigerate or freeze.

What is the intended use for the test strips?

GenUltimate!® Test Strips with calibration codes 4, 10 and 13 are for use with OneTouch® Ultra®, Ultra®2 and UltraMini® Meters. They are used to quantitatively measure glucose in fresh capillary whole blood samples taken from the finger, forearm or palm. Testing is done outside the body (in vitro diagnostic use). They are indicated for use by people with diabetes in their home as an aid to monitor the effectiveness of diabetes control. The system is not intended for the diagnosis of or screening for diabetes mellitus and is not intended for use on neonates.

Will my insurance cover GenUltimate!® blood glucose test strips?

GenUltimate!® is covered by Medicare Parts B & D, by major health issuers, and major HMO and PPO benefits. Although we do not take insurance as a form of payment, some insurance companies will reimburse the cost of the test strips when you send them proof of purchase. Contact your health insurance provider to find out about your personal coverage options. Fortunately, GenUltimate!® is priced low enough to benefit under-insured or uninsured customers.
